Press Release

Last July (2010), the Labrador and Quebec governments’ biologists confirmed an 80 % drop in the population of the George River caribou herd after completing their field inventory.

Poor weather conditions prevented the realization of the Leaf River herd inventory. A hypothetical number of 200,000 animals is, as we speak, publicized in the medias (a number representing, if confirmed, a 50% + drop in the population) but it will not be confirmed until next summer’s (June/July 2011) completion of the inventory.

The Quebec government and the Native Nations of Northern Quebec have the management responsibility of both caribou herds and have the decision power to continue or cease Sports hunting. No final decision has yet been taken.

Norpaq Adventures Inc. (originally  George River Lodge Ltd.) was founded in 1966 by Henri Culos. John and Pierre Paquet became the owners in 1986. For the past 25 years, we respectfully offered caribou fair chase hunts on both herds on North-East (George River) and North-West (Châteauguay & Pons Rivers) territories with one of the highest success rates of the industry.

We are very concerned by this situation and, in all honesty, we feel that the actual conditions are not allowing us to offer any caribou hunting trips . This is why we have decided, with all due respect to our clientele, and in the interest of  sports hunting  and of the legendary caribou specie, to suspend this activity until further notice.

We will maintain our fishing and bear hunting activities as well as keep all our main camp sites (N-E & N-W)functional and will only reinstate caribou hunting in our packages when favorable and safe conditions will have reached our standards.
